Der österreicher Maler und Videokünstler Willy Wysoudil und Tom Vater trafen sich 1998 auf dem Dach eines Hotels in Pokhara, Nepal. Damals war Tom Vater im Auftrag der British Library unterwegs, um die traditionelle Musik der Minderheiten Südasiens aufzunehmen. Willy Wysoudil war in Nepal unterwegs, um Film und Fotos für seine Videoinstallationen zu sammeln. Gemeinsam entschlossen sich die beiden eine CD herauszubringen: The Sounds of the Himalayas.
Die traditionelle Musik aus Ladakh wurde während eines Bogenschiesswettbewerbs im Nubra-Tal aufgenommen. Tom Vater wurde aufgefordert mitzuschiessen, aber traf die Zielscheibe kein einziges Mal. Stattdessen ist er mit den hier vorgestellten Aufnahmen zurückgekommen.

Austrian painter and fellow chronicler of the world Willy Wysoudil writes about his 15 minute video clip from the Nubra Valley in Ladakh:
“In the village of Diskit an archery competition is held for two days in July each year. Teams from several villages shoot bows and arrows at stationary targets before retiring to song and dance, chang (local beer) and tsampa (roasted barley flour).
The music was recorded by the journalist and author Tom Vater in 1997. It was our first work together and resulted in this beautiful cd album “Sounds Of The Himalays”. I put it together with footage I had from a mask dance in a Buddhist monastery in the Nepalese Himalayas in 2006. May peace prevail on earth! Enjoy this view into a complete different world!”
