Tom Vater's Travel Recommendations

The Last Home Guest House in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, has no website, but is a great and safe place to stop for a few days. Located near the National Museum in the heart of the city, it's in walking distance to Riverside and the rooms are clean and cheap. Most importantly, Saket, Poch and Lo manage the guest house with dedication and go out of their way to help their guests.

Makaibari Tea Gardens, Darjeeling, India

Cradled in the lap of the Himalayas, the mystical land of the ancient seers and saints, where the Vedas were created, Makaibari (literally "Maize Land") is in Kurseong, the Land of the White Orchid, in Darjeeling. In 1859, this magical land saw the development of the now fabled tea estate. It went on to become the best tea garden in the world....says Raja Banerjee, its owner. It certainly is a magical place. The plantations are beautifully and holistically maintained, they team with wildlife, including leopards and tigers, and accomodation can be arranged in an old British chalet, or as a home stay with a family of tea pluckers.

The Ad Here the 13th Bar in Bangkok, Thailand

The Ad Here Bar is a hole in the wall bar near Khao San Road, Bangkok's backpacker ghetto. Great live music every night and a full, raucously dancing house at the weekends.

But what makes the Ad Here truly special is Pong, the bar's owner and guitar player of the house band. This guy is a world class player, and humble to boot. Rarely heard a guy who swings so well.

Ad Here is located right across the bridge at Banglamphu intersection, a few minutes walk north on Samsen Road from Khao San Road

Mohans Adventure Travel, Hardwar, Northern India

Situated in Hardwar, the city where the Ganges breaks from the Himalayas into the Indian plains, Mohans Adventure Travel is owned and managed by Sanjeev Mehta, tour guide and production manager extraordinaire. Sanjeev arranges treks and trips all over India and works regularly on international documentary film shoots. Not only is Sanjeev extremely dedicated and reliable; it's also real fun working with him. Highly recommended.
