Elections in Thailand today!
This shot, which ran as a double spread in The Times, is from May 19th 2010, the day the Thai military wiped the floor with Thaksin´s armed thugs and loyal followers, following a two month stand-off in the on-going struggle between the country´s two utterly polarized elites.
Since the urban warfare in May last year, the kingdom has become more polarized and supporters of either side, utterly unaware that they are being taken for a ride by their paymasters, have made little progress towards genuine democratic discourse. People power it ain´t.
Whoever wins on July 3rd, is likely to be confronted with more political and possibly criminal shenanigans, more violence, more subterfuge.
Shame, or perhaps quite the opposite – Thailand´s a great country.
