Endlich gibt es nun Amerikas Geheimer Krieg in Laos, ein Dokumentarfilm von Marc Eberle, bei dem ich als Drehbuchautor mitgewirkt habe, auf DVD.
Der Vietnamkrieg war einer der medial präsentesten Kriege der Geschichte. Doch im Nachbarland Laos fand parallel der größte und längste Luftkrieg der Geschichte im Geheimen statt, was Laos zum meist bombardierten Land der Erde macht. Das unvorstellbare Ausmaß an Zerstörung und Leid setzt sich auf absurde Weise bis heute fort. Regisseur und Autor Marc Eberle erzählt von der größten geheimen Militäroperation der CIA und von der grausamen Surrealität eines Krieges, der in keinem Geschichtsbuch steht, dem aber hunderttausende Unschuldige zum Opfer fielen. Er begibt sich mit seinem Team auf eine filmische Spurensuche in Laos. Er trifft ehemalige CIA-Offiziere, den General der Hmong-Armee, frühere Piloten, Journalisten und laotische Zeitzeugen, und mit den außerordentlichen Erfahrungen der Beteiligten und der Betroffenen stößt er tief ins Herz dieses Konfliktes vor, der zugleich ein Bild amerikanischer Geopolitik von damals wie von heute entwirft. Finally, the DVD for The Most Secret Place on Earth is out, about a year after the film surfaced on YouTube! There are some great extra, never before seen interviews with the film’s main characters but unfortunately the footage is all in German, as are the subtitles. Given that the film has garnered so much international and especially American interest, that’s a shame.

The Most Secret Place on Earth was screened at ten international film festivals and in German cinemas early 2009 and was nominated for the Golden Panda at Sichuan intl. Film Festival, China, the History Makers’ Award, New York, the Banff World Television Award, Canada, and the North German Film Award. The film has been broadcast on European television several times and is to be broadcast in 25 countries around the world, though not yet in the US or Laos, the two countries where a screening would generate the greatest interest.
