Thank you for sharing your history of Sousath. He helped me in my nine trips to Laos, documenting my version of “Remnants of a Secret War”. I wish he had lived to see my book published.

I was so sad to hear of Sousath’s passing when I came across this webpage today while hunting his contact details for a friend who is about to visit Laos. He was a fantastic man and I enjoyed meeting him in 2005 when I visited Laos.

I first met Sousath back in the early 1990s. He was a remarkable man and a true friend. We shared many good times in Laos. I was fortunate enough to meet all of his family, including his father Soth Phetrasy. All of the Phetrasy’s treated me with the highest respect and included me in family functions. It has been many years since my last trip to Laos, but I hope to return and visit the Maly Hotel, as well as with Sousath’s wife – Sivone, his daughter – Malysa, and son – Peter. I miss Sousath, he always brought a smile to my face. Sousath was a Good Man.

Hi William Shemeley, Sousath is my uncle. I’m doing research on Lao political history also. Knowing that you have met my grandfather once, I’m interested to know more. How can I contact you?

    Halley Phetrasy:

    Hi Halley,

I am William Shemeley, I have visited Laos many times back in the 1990s. I met and became very good friends with Sousath who introduced me to his family. I would bring much needed medical supplies to Laos for distribution throughout the country. I met Soth Phetrasy and was invited to his home a number of times. Soth asked me if I could get him some heart medication which he needed because of his heart problems I was able to have the prescriptions filled and brought them to Soth on my next visit. I lost contact with Sousath sometime in the late 1990s, then I found out that he had died. I took a longshot and thought I would write to the Maly Hotel to see if Sivone or Malysa remembered me. The next day Malysa sent me a very nice message stating how they remembered me, even though Malysa was a very young child when I first met her. She still calls me Uncle William. Unfortunately we could not make the trip at that time. I would love to go back to Laos and stay at the Maly Hotel and visit with Sivone and Malysa, but I have cancer so my travel is limited. If you get this message my email is thequack6970@gmail.com
