I am extremely delighted that Exhibit A Books have published my second novel THE CAMBODIAN BOOK OF THE DEAD in the US today.

The UK edition is out in a couple of weeks. The novel featuring the German detective Maier has a long history which I recently discussed as a guest blogger with Keith Walters.

There was no room in that blog to thank my principal supporters without whom I would never have finished the book: my wife Aroon who offered sensible suggestions to get out of several literary blind alleys (only to see me return into them almost immediately), my brother Marc with whom I shared many Cambodian adventures, my friend UK editor Lucy Ridout who provided invaluable advice on structure, and Emlyn Rees, commissioning editor for Exhibit A who signed me. Over the many years I have worked and traveled in Cambodia, numerous encounters shaped my understanding of the country and inspired me to write THE CAMBODIAN BOOK OF THE DEAD. Those friends and non-friends are credited in the book.

THE CAMBODIAN BOOK OF THE DEAD is Maier’s first case. I’m about to wrap up the second Detective Maier Mystery THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN MIND, which takes my investigator to Laos and back in time to the country’s CIA financed secret war in the 1960s

The Story:

Private eye and former war reporter, Maier is sent to Cambodia to track down the missing heir to a Hamburg coffee empire.

His search leads him into the darkest corners of the country’s history, through the Killing Fields of the communist revolution, to the White Spider, a Nazi war criminal who reigns over an ancient Khmer temple deep in the jungle.

But the terrifying tale of mass murder that Maier uncovers is far from over. And soon Maier realises that, if he is to prevent more innocent lives from being destroyed, he will have to write the last horrific chapter himself.

The Cambodian Book of the Dead – it’s where Apocalypse Now meets The Beach

“The narrative is fast-paced and the frequent action scenes are convincingly written. The smells and sounds of Cambodia are vividly brought to life. Maier is a bold and brave hero.”
